Thirteen Things That Gross Me Out

1. Sippy cups with 2 day old milk. You know, it’s all solidified in the bottom and you spend 5 minutes debating just tossing the whole cup in the outside garbage. If you are brave enough to open it the milk comes out in one big glob and stinks up the entire kitchen.

2. The smell of gasoline. I believe there are 2 kinds of people those that love the smell of gas and those that love the smell of fresh paint. I fall into the latter category. I’ve yet to find someone that likes both.

3. Boogers in my kids noses. I’m one of those mom that picks. I can’t stand to see boogers in their noses. I will confess to even picking the noses of other people’s kids (under 2 only) if working in the church nursery (w/ a tissue in those cases).

4. Snakes – okay this is more of a FREAK me out but they’re gross too.

5. Touching fish (like freshly caught) – won’t do it.

6. Vomit – okay that’s one is pretty universal – the worst is if hot dogs are involved. We had a Tang/Hot Dog episode once that lives on in family lore.

7. Really stinky diapers. I’m pretty good at this, most don’t bother me but you know every once in awhile there is one that just makes the gag reflex go, you can’t help it.
8
. Eating oysters – I think it goes along w/ the touching fish thing. I just can’t get them down.

9. Moldy food in the refrigerator – no brainer

10. Finding 4 week old chicken nuggets underneath a seat in my van. Then having 6yr old say "Yum" and eat it before I can grab it to throw it away.

11. Hair on the shower walls – gotta rinse

12. My husband’s breath after he drinks pickle juice

13. My husband’s breath after eating Doritos (or anyone for that matter)

Birthday Horse

May 31, 2006 at 3:41 pm (Fun)

So for my 33rd birthday I got a horse named Dillon, courtesy of one of my bestest friends, Stacey.  I’ve always wanted a horse, I love horses!

Okay, so I only got him for an hour (I’m pretty sure my HOA doesn’t allow horses in my backyard).

Stacey arranged a great birthday surprise for me. I knew we were going horseback riding but what I didn’t know was that she’d arranged for 5 other girlfriends to join us. She was VERY insistent at stopping at Starbucks on the way where they were waiting.

We drove to South Mountain to the Ponderosa Stables (I think that was the name, correct me if I’m wrong Stacey) where we got a 1 hour trail ride and a cowboy breakfast that we ate sitting on hay bales.

Horseback riding isn’t the most conducive environment to a bunch of girls gabbing as you can pretty much only talk to the person in front of and behind you. And Stacey was bringing up the rear so her and I didn’t visit much. But we had a great time and it’s a great birthday memory to have. Thanks Stacey for arranging it. And thanks Theresa, Tracey, Beth, Kim and Patti for coming and making my day really fun.

“M” is for…

May 29, 2006 at 9:54 am (Fun)

Here’s a fun little game, courtesy of Lauren and then Shannon.  It works like this:  Shannon assigned me a letter (B), and I have to list ten things that start with M, and why I chose them.  If you want to play, email me and I’ll assign you a letter, etc. etc.  Got it?  Good.

Ten Significant Words that Start With the Letter M (not necessarily in order):

1. Mark: My hubby of almost 13 years. We dated for 4 years before that so I’ve officially known him for more than half my life. He is a great dad and a wonderful spiritual leader of our family.
2. My Mom: She is amazing. She sacrificed so much over the years (which I didn’t realize until I had kids of my own). She is a godly woman who has changed so many lives through her work at crisis pregnancy centers and her counseling. She is an awesome Grammie and gives me a break once a week by watching the kids for me. How cool is that?
3. McDreamy: One of the reasons I watch "Grey’s Anatomy" – my favorite show. If you watch you know what I’m talking about. If you don’t, well your loss.
4. Mercy Me: They sing this amazing song called "I Can Only Imagine" about what it will be like in heaven (or more accurately that we don’t know). It makes me cry every time. Someone has to sing it at my funeral.
5. Motherhood: What can I say, it’s the hardest but most rewarding job there is. There are days when it makes me cry and days when it makes me laugh and I wouldn’t trade either for anything.
6. Mercy: It astounds me to think of the mercy that God bestows on each one of us – how he loves us and cares for us. How his heart breaks when we are hurting.
7. Men: Of course they drive us crazy at times but there are so many that have had an impact on my life – my dad, my brothers, my father-in-law, brother-in-law, professors, pastors and friends. If only they could learn to put the new roll of toilet paper ON the holder.
8. Military: While we only spent 4 years in the Army, I have a small insight into the life of the military family. My heart goes out to all those women (and men) who’s spouses, children, etc are fighting for freedom. Whether or not you agree with the politics those men and women are doing their job, no questions asked, and risking their lives for the freedom of people in a different country. My prayers go out to them, especially on this Memorial Day.
9.  Movies: I’m a movie junkie and I admit it. I love going to the movies, renting movies. I like all genres – action, comedy, romantic, drama. I enjoy watching the ones with award-winning performances and the silly romantic comedies that will never win an Oscar.
10. "Move It. Move It.": You know, the song from Madagascar. The one you can’t get out of your head. My kids LOVE this song and sing it all the time. The watch the music video on the DVD over and over. My son even drew a picture and sentence in his kindergarten journal and I’ll be darned if those stick figures don’t actually look like they’re doing the dance 🙂

Friday Five

May 26, 2006 at 9:18 am (Fun)

My hubby is right, I don’t have the brain power to come up with a Thursday Thirteen this week so I’m following his footsteps and doing a Friday five.

Five Things I Like to Do on My Day Off
(Yes, I actually get a day off. Once a week my mom takes my kids. How jealous are you?)

1. Pedicure or Manicure
2. Clothes shopping (Ross is my favorite)
3. Stamp or scrapbook
4. Watch a movie or TV. Yes, I will, on occassion, actually go to the movies by myself. I don’t have to do this as much anymore as I have Stacey to go to all the chick flicks with.
5. As hard as I try to stay off of it, I’m usually on my computer surfing, reading blogs.

My traumatized 3 yr old

May 23, 2006 at 2:49 pm (Parenting)

I have scarred my kids for life. Seriously they both get jumpy getting in the car with me now. (Read why here)

I thought I had back seat drivers before? Ha! My 3 1/2 yr old will randomly shout out "Don’t crash mama!"…when there are no other cars in sight. Or after a morning of errands "Good job not crashing mama. I’m so proud of you."

Last night while riding with her dad she told him "Daddy, you’re not allowed to crash because then I couldn’t hug you and kiss you like mama." (For the record, I have not cut off the hugs and kisses, just they can’t involve jumping all over my legs and ankle – which is hard for a 3 year old.)

My son has been overly emotional for the last couple weeks and we finally had a good talk the other night and he admitted that he’s still a little freaked out, scared when he thinks about it, scared that it will happen again. What are you supposed to say to that? I can’t promise him that it will never happen again. I tried to reassure him that mommy tries her best to be safe and that God was obviously watching out for us and protecting us (Seriously, if I had been another 60 seconds into my turn it’s quite possible that one or both of my kids would not be here today.)

I’m hoping it will wear off with time. I have to admit I’m skittish enough as it is without the help from the peanut gallery.

Seriously? This is news?

May 21, 2006 at 9:39 pm (Uncategorized)

It’s been a couple days but I just have to say that I was amazed at this story.

Spears stumbles, nearly drops her baby

Okay, I realize that Britney Spears is not going to win mommy of the year due to her whole “driving w/ baby in lap” incident. But suddenly the press has to report on her every parenting issue…the high chair drop…car seat facing forward (again, not defending her). But this one takes the cake.

Heaven forbid, she almost fell while holding her baby! The horrors! That’s never happened to a single other mom on this planet. What was she thinking? She should go barefoot to avoid tripping in heals. And she should probably use a walker while we’re thinking of it. That way she’d be sure to never fall.

I feel bad for her. I mean, how many of us have had one of those dumb mother moments. I once drove 15 miles w/ my then 6 week old son in his infant carrier but NOT BUCKLED. I nearly fainted when I arrived at my destination and was envisioning all sorts of nasty things that could have happened. I’ve had friends who have bumped their babies heads on a car sideview mirror…stuff like this happens. It is NOT NEWS!

So come on…fess up…what’s your “dumb mom” moment. Maybe we can make Britney feel a little bit better.

Thirteen Places I Want to Visit

1. Kauai – again, just didn’t have enough time the first time.

2. Paris – before I’m 40. I made my husband promise. I don’t care if he goes with me I just made him promise I’d get there before then.

3. Italy – Rome, Venice, Florence and someplace in the countryside

4. Disney World – only been to the West coast theme parks.

5. Prince Edward Island – What can I say, I love Anne of Green Gables.

6. Spain

7. Greece

8. Seattle – been once but would love to go back. Hubby is not so interested. Say the word "Seattle" and all he can think about is Officer Basic Course and the "6 ft ant hills". He swears he’s not exaggerating.

9. Scotland – I’ve seen Edinburgh and Glasgow but would love more time to explore

10. Belize

11. Berlin – Since we lost our camera on our trip I guess I can use that as an excuse to need to go back and retake the pictures right?

12. Anywhere that has a beach.

13. New York City – I’ve been probably 4 or 5 times but I never get tired of it. I love this city. When I was in high school I dreamed of moving there and working at the New York Times.

Works for Me Wednesday

May 17, 2006 at 9:32 am (Works For Me Wednesday)

Another edition of Works for Me Wednesday and boy am I running out of ideas. But here’s my toy storage solution.

Buy one of those cube systems that you can get at Target or Costco. They’re usually around $12-15. Put it together in whatever formation you want. Then find a Yaffa storage container – they are the perfect fit inside the cubes. (One of those pictured below is actually smaller than the others – I prefer the bigger size.)

Note the cube system will also fit inside a normal size closet (depth wise) if you want to hide them. I have these in both kids rooms and the playroom. The Yaffa containers come in different colors so you can match them to the decor. Periodically I go through and organize the toys per container but they don’t stay that way for long.

Head over to Shannon at Rocks in My Dryer to see all the Works for Me Wednesday posts.

Another meme

May 16, 2006 at 6:10 pm (Fun)

Both my body and my brain are on vacation so this is all I got for today.

Accent: I don’t have one. We don’t have accents in Arizona. Or so we tell people. I’ll throw a "y’all" in there every once in awhile from my 6 years in TX.

Bible Book that I like: Hm, Psalms cuz I identify w/ a lot of David’s writings in the midst of his pain. My favorite story is Esther though for sure. Has been since I was a little girl.

Chore that I don’t care for: Laundry. It’s never ending. By the time I get all the clothes clean there’s dirty ones piling up.

Dog or Cat: Dog – a basset hound named Snickers although she is currently living with our in-laws until we get our landscaping in.

Essential Electronics: DVR (like Tivo), iPod Nano, cell phone, computer

Favorite Cologne: Beautiful by Estee Lauder

Gold or Silver: Silver although I like combo stuff.

Handbag I Carry most often: oooh, I have too many to pick just one.

Insomnia: Sometimes. My mind is usually still spinning. The Wellbutrin doesn’t help. My solution on nights like that is a Benadryl which does wonders.

Job Title: COO of House, Wonder Woman, mom, wife, graphic designer, web designer

Kids: Two – Noah 6.5; Natalie 3.5

Living Arrangements: Not quite 1 year old house – 2600 sq ft – 4bdr, den, big old backyard full of dirt (next on my To-Do list)

Most Admirable Trait:  Dude, I get it done and I get it done fast. Okay, maybe that’s not my best. I’m not sure.

Naughtiest childhood behavior: Who me? Um, me and my brothers snuck out the window in the middle of the night and lit off firecrackers.

Overnight hospital stay: Twice for childbirth.

Phobias: Drowning (don’t mind swimming), SNAKES – total heebeegeebees.

Quote: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jer. 29:11

Religion: Christian – although as our pastor says, it’s not about religion, it’s about a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Siblings: 2 older brothers – one lawyer, one bodyguard for a governor. One brother-in-law. Three sister-in-laws (getting one more in a month).

Time I wake up: 7:30 on school days which barely gets me time to feed son and get him off to school. On days where I can sleep in (bless you my husband) it’s more like 10 or 10:30. I can’t wait til summer.

Unusual Talent or skill:  I’m pretty good at doing math in my head. I read really fast.

Vegetable I refuse to eat: Cauliflower

Worst habit:  In my haste to get stuff done I often make mistakes.

X-rays: Dental and of course, my ankle last weekend.

Yummy stuff I cook: Cheesy Beef Enchiladas, Chicken Enchiladas, Chicken Tetrizzini

Zoo animal I like most: Monkeys. My dad went to Africa when I was a child and I begged him to bring me home a moneky. I think I watched too many of those Disney movies where they’d dress the apes up in clothes and stuff. It was my solution to not having a younger brother or sister.

I’m tagging Mark and Kelley.

Slowing Down

May 16, 2006 at 12:04 am (Faith)

For those of you who know me, you know that I don’t like to stand still. I get bored if I have nothing to do (TV qualifies as something to do). And when I’m doing something, I do it fast. I walk fast, I talk fast, I read fast. It’s just in my nature…until now.

My husband has taken to calling me "Hop-A-Long". After 8 days my right ankle is still not healed. I am still wearing the air cast but can make it without the crutches as long as it’s not too much walking. But boy am I SSSSLLLLOOOOWWWW. And it’s so annoying. Mark is torn between trying to keep up with the kids who are running ahead and not wanting to leave me in the dust. Of course he opts for the kids as he knows I won’t be running into oncoming traffic.

At the end of the day I am exhausted by the extra energy it takes to get through the day. I have such a newfound awe and respect for people who have to go through life with a disability like this. I know that my short time pales in comparison and I really shouldn’t be complaining.

So I’m trying to stay positive and take this as a time to slow down and realize that I don’t have to do everything myself, it’s okay to ask for help and it’s okay to NEED help.

I’ll have to post some pictures of my foot in a few days. It’s looking lovely (if you like your skin to be purple blue and green). No camera cord w/ us in CA but I’ll post one soon.
