Before You Get Married

December 21, 2006 at 3:29 pm (Home)

I told my sister-in-law many years ago that any couple contemplating marriage ought to be required to do two things:

1) go on a long road trip together – something over 14 hours
2) do a home improvement project together

You will learn MANY interesting things about each other that no other experience can give you. Like how often you’ll be allowed to make bathroom stops…or that you significant other can spend 20 minutes browsing the gas station food mart…or that he eats corn nuts on road trips (YICK!)…or that he never lets you drive.

What did I learn during the home improvement project? NOT to do home improvement projects with him. Note, that’s why the pergola was built with my dad.

Anyways, you have to read this hysterical post by Antique Mommy – "Premarital Counseling – Now Available At Home Depot!"

I think that’s a great idea… or maybe you could just go on Amazing Race : )-

Only 14 hours?? That’s not even a full 1 day drive… But a good start to let you see how grumpy the other may get.
As a side note, the long trip thing is also a good idea to implement for a pre-employment hiring screening, as you will find all the quirks about a possible employee.

By the way – as for the home improvement project, my Grandpa taught me a good lesson on that one – Do what you do best and hire out the rest.

Another good rule is – its ok to do a project with your own family members, but not with your in-laws.
