May you rest…

September 29, 2007 at 8:09 pm (Faith)

A friend emailed this to me this morning – just what I needed so I thought I would share.

"Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in him,
for he shields him all day long,
and the one the LORD loves rests between his shoulders."

WFMW – Best Carpet Spot Remover EVER!

September 25, 2007 at 6:56 pm (Works For Me Wednesday)

Wfmwheader_2
I forget which friend it was who turned me on to this stuff, I think Michelle, but it is the best stuff ever. I have gotten dirt, blood, red juice, vomit and all manner of things out of the carpet with Folex Spot Remover.

I’m adding a picture of the bottle because it doesn’t have a catchy label or anything so you might miss it on the shelf. I am able to get it at my Wal-Mart. I’ve also seen it at Home Depot and their web site has a retailer locator if you need it. I believe it’s about $8 a bottle but I’ve had this bottle for about 2 years.

You squirt the spot real good, rub at it with your fingers, then blot it up with a rag.

No need to worry

September 22, 2007 at 9:36 pm (Uncategorized)

So last week I was all worried that everyone on our street would think I was a grouchy neighbor. Turns out I have no worries at all.

Yesterday some of the neighbor kids were out riding scooters, etc and the kids wanted to go out. I met one of the moms (we’ll call her C) on the street that I hadn’t met before and we got to talking. Well apparently I’ve been living in a cocoon because I did not know there was so much drama going on right under my nose.

Seems that the lady on the other end of the street has the police department on speed dial and will call the police to complain about C for whatever reasons – even told them she is fearful of her life. Trust me – C is not at all scary. So I went home later thinking that if the cops did show up at that party then at least they probably assumed it was that lady :-)

Today, around 5 I noticed the kids were out again so we went out. There were kids from 4 different families out all of whom had a parent outside watching. Whenever a car would turn on the street we would make sure everyone was out of the way, etc. Over at C’s house her husband and a couple of his friends stood in the driveway talking. None of the kids went anywhere near Grouchy’s house. (Seem’s C had another run in with Grouchy last night when she called the police and complained that they were being too loud in their garage. The police looked it up in their computer and saw that it was the 4th complaint the lady had called in.)

So today, we’d been out about 30 minutes when 3 police cars pulled in the street – 3!!!! One stopped in front of C’s house. The other two spaced out a little. Grouchy had called the cops and told them that a) the kids were playing in the street unattended b) the men were standing in the middle of the street drinking and c) we were too loud. Wow – none of it was true!

Fortunately one of the officers kind of knew the situation. They talked with the guys for awhile and then left. About 30 minutes later one of the officers returned, parked in front of Grouchy’s house and went in – was still in there when we went inside. Hopefully telling her to stop harassing the neighbors.

Funny How God Works

September 19, 2007 at 7:17 pm (Faith)

Yesterday morning I got an email from a friend asking for prayer regarding fear she had. She realized the fear was not coming from God, but from Satan (2 Tim 1:7 – "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.") So I was tooling around the house cleaning (WAY overdue) praying for her and thinking about that verse. Little did I know how much I would need it just a few hours later.

Around lunch time my cell phone rang. I didn’t recognize the number so I hit "ignore" and a few minutes later checked the voice mail. It was my dad calling from Nairobi, Africa to say that my mom had to be hospitalized for a severe case of…well… the runs (I know, TMI). Normally this wouldn’t be a HUGE deal but my mom is a diabetic and something like this can affect her blood sugar levels quickly and can be quite dangerous. She has had one other really scary experience on one of her Africa trips 3 years ago. (She goes once a year for a medical missions trip.)

The info on my dad’s message was scant (you know men and details) – "it’s not diabetic, still running tests". Um, dad, not enough info.

I frantically tried to reach him at the "hotel" he had just called me from but no one was answering (but I wasn’t sure it wasn’t my long distance because the phone wasn’t "ringing" so much as it was "honking" at me). So I called my MIL who I knew would have an international calling card. Called again, much honking but no answer.

Despite the fact that it was 11 p.m. there I bit the bullet and called the number he gave me for my mom’s room. I did get through to her and she said hello a couple of times before silence. Called back AGAIN and reached a nurse who told me she fell asleep while on the phone.

Well thank goodness they don’t have HIPPA laws in Africa and the nurse was able to tell me that she was getting better, was able to eat some, but was very tired. That finally put my mind at rest enough that I could wait until a better time to reach them.

How quickly we can give in to a spirit of fear if we are not careful. It is especially difficult for me when it’s a situation that I can do NOTHING about…I’m a little bit of a control freak. Not that prayer is nothing but it has taken me a long time to get to the point where I can be okay with doing JUST that.

I did talk to my mom last night and she was feeling better and hopeful she would get out today. But I received an email from my dad this morning that said she had a setback and also had a low blood sugar crash. (This is the scary part.) The malaria test came back negative which is a huge praise. They are doing more tests and hopefully will have results tomorrow. Prayers would be appreciated! She said she is getting good care which is awesome.

WFMW – Stop solicitors

September 18, 2007 at 9:06 pm (Works For Me Wednesday)

Wfmwheader
The last two houses we have lived in have been in new developments. And somehow a new development seems to be a prime target for door-to-door solicitors – exterminators, water softeners, alarm systems – you name it, they come to sell it.

I actually had the same exterminator come to my door 3 times in one week. On the last visit when I opened the door with a very exasperated look he hesitated and said "Um, I’ve already been here haven’t I?" "YEAH!"

This is especially annoying if you have children who nap. Or if you nap (lucky duck!)

So off I went to Office Max and bought myself a $2 sign that says "No Soliciting". It’s stuck to the wall above my doorbell…and all is quiet. Every new house gets one.

My little buddy is home!

September 17, 2007 at 11:04 pm (Parenting)

For the past two weeks I have been without my precious daughter Natalie (4.5). She got to go with her grandma and great grandma to visit her Aunt, Uncle and 5 cousins in Arkansas. Did I mention she was gone for TWO weeks? It seemed like forever!

It was so quiet in the house, even when Mark and Noah(7) were home. Natalie is our little chatter box (my mom claims she gets it from me…whatever!)

I know there will be some adjustments the next few days as she readjusts her internal clock and big brother adjusts to having to share the toys, TV and mom with her. Deprogramming I guess.

I had all these big ideas for things I could do while she was gone – scrapbook, paint a room, get a pedicure.

Let’s see – I got 1 scrapbook layout done, I did go to a movie one day (Becoming Jane) and other than that I pretty much was a bum. Of course I was sick the first week so that didn’t help. I’m sure glad she’s home though.

I became one of THOSE neighbors

September 16, 2007 at 12:35 am (Uncategorized)

Back in the days when hubby was in the military we would spend many an evening at our friends house sitting in their driveway hanging out in lawn chairs. We were generally a quiet bunch, we weren’t playing loud music and there was, at the most, six of us. But Steve and Rubi had a grouchy neighbor who would call the cops and complain about the "noise".  We would be annoyed and the cops would become annoyed when they realize that the "wild party" was six people sitting around talking.

But tonight, I finally became one of THOSE grouchy neighbors. When Noah-7 and I got home around 5 I noticed that there were quite a few cars in the neighborhood – 6 of them in one driveway. As the night when on more and more cars appeared. By Noah’s bedtime you could hear the music inside our house. Every couple minutes he would get up to complain about the noise. We already had the sound machine on in his room, plus the humidifier to try and drown out the noise.

Mark started to call the police but I said that maybe we should go down there and ask them first to turn it down.  But we didn’t and he went to bed with his ear plugs in.

At one point I turned on my front lights and went outside to the one car that was parked in front of our house and asked them to turn the radio down which they did.

But the people kept coming – radio’s going, tires squealing. By 11 p.m. I’d had enough. I confess. I called the cops. I don’t know if they ever did come by or if people just finally went home, but by about midnight it was quiet.

The lady I talked to at the police department took my name, address and phone and asked "Do you want officer contact?"

Um, no, I prefer they NOT know which house the grouchy neighbor lives in!

WFMW – Family Devotional Time

September 11, 2007 at 9:43 pm (Works For Me Wednesday)

Over a year ago we implemented a “Family Worship Time” at our house with our kids (nearly 8, nearly 5). It consists of reading a verse, short kid-friendly devotional, prayer and sometimes a song.

We had been having it on the couch in the family room after dinner. Needless to say there are difficulties trying to get the two kids to behave during this time – somehow they seem to get a second wind. What was supposed to be a time of reflection usually ended up as a time of frustration.

Until a few weeks ago I was thinking about our family devotional time we had growing up. It was always done right after dinner, at the table. No one could leave until it was done. Usually the first one finished eating would ask “May I read now?” and if most everyone seemed to be toward the end of their meal then we would go ahead and do the reading (usually a chapter of the Bible).

I adapted it a little – we cleared the plates and utensils distractions – and waited til everyone was done but BEFORE dessert (which, lest you think I fill my kids with cookies every night, usually consists of an Otter Pop).

It worked brilliantly. There was no hopping up and down on the couch cushions, no staring at all the toys that lay just out of reach, etc. Guess my parents did have some good ideas, huh?
